Under14's v Yarra ValleyI wish to apologize to the U14 rep team and parents, many of whom made sacrifices to make themselves available to play all day against Yarra Valley. The late notice of forfeit received at the ground at 9.15 am was annoying to all of us. Thank you for you dedication throughout the season. The camaraderie with the boys, parents and me was terrific. I particularly enjoyed the “lighted hearted banter” between the team mates in our “double wicket” game we played in lieu on Sunday morning. I wish all boys who tried out and played games for the FTGDCA U14 representative team good luck and hope you continue to develop your cricket skills. Turf Side Games By Gavin Murphy With no chance of finals FTG last match against the 3rd placed Moorabbin was all important for the visitors, needing a win to secure a finals berth. Moorabbin started well and were 3/80 off 20 ov, then on came the spinners Baker 3/20, Chambo 2 wkts & the Bradanator 3/7 as we rolled CMCA for 115. As a result of our hard work we had to bat for 10 overs before lunch , Scanners & the G train got the score to 30, but both fell on that score with rash shots. After the break Luke Rose went as the score was 3/48. Skippa Trenno (26no) and the Bradanator (41no ) saw us win 3 wkts down. As well as we did , we could only rue the chances we had to make finals, all boys will be on the improve next time round !!!!!!!! R4 Saw FTG off to good start , being 2/64 after 15ov. 2 bad run-outs saw us slow to 6/112 at the 30 over mark. Opener Luke Scanlon 28 was unlucky to be caught after a cracking drive whilst Tom Griffin and Troy GStrein put on 50 for the 7th wicket, but we lost a couple quickly and Troy ( 54) was last man out trying to force the pace 164, with 5 overs left. Troy has scored 201 runs in his 3 Innings so far,. We started as badly as any team could Southern were 0/50 after 6 overs, we changed to spin & took our 3rd wicket at drinks to have them 3/69. Josh Chamberlain was tweaking his leggies right on tune and a run-out saw them 4/76. They steadied and looked home at the 30 over mark 5/124. After drinks Luke Scanlon came back with spin, ending up with 3 wkts. At the 40 over mark Southern had stopped to a walk, 8/147, a tight finish was coming up. Thier no 3 Batsmen steadied there ship (70no) as the limped home in the 2nd last over , We probably needed 25 more runs! 106 to Johnson Park keeper Troy Gstrein led FTG to a good win in Game 2, Troy went in at 2/25 and added 170 with Luke Scanlon(67), Troy's innings followed a good 43 the day before when he looked set to post a big score FTG went onto score 5/218cc off 45 overs. Box Hill came out strong and steady, and lost their 1st wicket at 70, with a great catch by Cameron Sharpe. Box Hill slowed to 2/90 at 30 overs, although after the drinks break requiring 8 an over they surged with 37 runs off the next 3 overs, before Cameron Sharpe bowled a double wicket maiden, Jayden Bradbury took up the bowling from the same end & took 3/21 Box Hill kept attacking and ended at 8/170. Day one saw FTG sent in on a black & wet pitch, with lots of balls bouncing twice or grubbing, we were all out on the last ball for 159. Top scorers were Gstrein 43, Sharpe 40 and Chamberlain 26. We looked in control 1/2 way through Dandenongs innings after Mark Baker had a super spell of 6 overs 6 maidens 3-0. Unfortunately the no 8 bat for Dandy make 65 not out and we were beaten in the last over with dandy 8 wickets down

We finished in the top half of the draw and were matched against Eastern1 who had previously bowled all other components out (40 wickets in 4 games) and had also bowled all teams out for less than 100 runs. We managed 6/133 and had taken 6 of their wickets before our score was passed. There was a huge gap in overall batting talent in the much taller and older Eastern 1 team. We lost our 1st game narrowly to Dandenong (we should have won!!!!) which would have seen us matched against an opponent I am sure we could beat in the qtr finals. As the tournament went along the FTGDCA team started to bond and learn how to play as a team and our performances shone through with wins against Yarra Valley and RDCA.
FTGDCA Under 12's
Mitchell Cup SideThe two week long VMCU Junior Carnival concluded on Sunday the 20th with the FTGDCA under 12 team defeating the RDCA for the Keith Mitchell Cup. After bowling the RDCA out for 96 in the 36th over, FTGDCA passed them 3 down in the 34th to convincingly win the Cup.
The final squad was made up as follows: Campbell Craigie (c) Monbulk Dan Carr (vc) Monbulk Perry Cole Ferntree Gully Jayden Hawkes Knox Gardens Aiden Inglis Lysterfield Jordan Ley Johnson Park Thilina Perera Mulgrave Nathan Potalej Eildon Park Matthew Price Lysterfield Nathan Slaughter Lysterfield Timothy Sugumar Eildon Park Harry Walshe Eildon Park Josh Wylde Knox Gardens Round One was back on Monday, the 7th of January. We had a home match to start proceedings. Winning the toss we decided to bat first. Daniel and Campbell opened the batting and put on a quick 29 runs at a rate of 4 per over. Campbell scored 13 before being caught off the opening bowler. Aiden came in and made 7 runs, which included a MASSIVE six, before being caught. Josh and Dan put on 25 in the next 10 overs before Josh was bowled by the top wicket taker. Jordan then batted with Dan until Dan retired on 41 in the 27th over, then with Nathan P to put on 87 runs. The two Nathans were both out in the final over with the score 5/150. The opposition made a good start with their innings. The first wicket fell with the score on 44 in the 11th over with Matthew taking a clean catch off Tim, then 3 overs later, Jayden took a catch to give Thilina his first wicket. Dan took the 3rd wicket in the 19th over, bowled. Dandenong put on 56 runs before Thilina took a high catch off his own bowling. Dan and Tim took one more wicket each, catches to Campbell and Josh (keeping). With four runs an over required in the last few overs, the BIG Dandenong boy picked out the gaps and hit the winning runs in the last over. A great first match with some positive signs for the future matches. FTGDCA 5/150 (Carr 41 ret, Ley 33, Potalej 22) def. by Dandenong 6/158 (Sugumar 2/19, Perera 2/12, Carr 2/15) Round Two was against Mornington Peninsula. When we got to the right ground at Carrum Downs, we won the toss and this time decided to bowl first. Nathan S and Jayden bowled very tightly with runs hard to come by. Thilina and Perry also restricted the runs. Harry took the first of his many wickets with the first ball of his spell, Dan taking the catch. He took his second wicket in his second over, this time caught by Campbell. Mornington consolidated with a 47 run partnership before Harry took 2 wickets from the first two balls of his last over, both bowled. Campbell took a catch off Dan two overs later, then a run out in the next over, a great throw from Jayden to Thilina at the bowlers end. The target was set at 110. The opening pair of Dan and Campbell started conservatively. Campbell was bowled in the 9th over for 9. Aiden again at number 3 began well putting on a 23 run partnership with Dan before Dan was run out on 16 in the 16th over. Aiden made a solid 26. The outfield was lush, so the low target was very deceiving. On top of that the Mornington bowlers were accurate with 5 wickets bowled and 1 lbw. Mornington Peninsula 6/109 (Walshe 4/3, Carr 1/15) def. FTGDCA 96 (Inglis 26, Carr 16) Round Three was against City of Moorabbin and was moved from Thursday to Wednesday due to Thursdays predicted 41 degree temperature. The boys arrived with a positive attitude despite the result of the previous practice match. We won another toss and elected to bowl first again. Jayden and Nathan S opened the bowling again. Nathan got the first breakthrough in the 6th over, bowled. But the next breakthrough was not until the 18th over, Dan taking a catch off his own bowling. The opener retired then Nathan S took the 3rd wicket in the 26th over, another bowled. Tim took the 4th wicket three overs later, caught by Jayden, then the 5th in his next over, lbw. Perry took a catch off Jayden in the last over and there was a run out. The target set was 164. The Campbell and Dan combination produced a 44 run opening partnership, the first wicket falling in the 15th over, a great start to a long run chase. Aiden went cheaply, Nathan S made a quick 12, which included a SIX. Jordan, Matthew and Nathan P all took their turn batting with Dan until Dan retired on 40. Josh came in at number 8 with 10 overs to go and 70 runs to get. Batting with Harry they put on 52 runs in 8 overs, causing a great deal of worry to the Moorabbin coach. They finished just 9 runs short – who would have thought!!! City of Moorabbin 7/163 (Slaughter 2/14, Sugumar 2/18, Carr 1/30) def. FTGDCA 7/155 (Carr 40 ret, Wylde 31, Walshe 22*) Round Four against Box Hill Reporter District was cancelled (Drawn) due to the predicted temperature of 40. It would have been a wash out!!!! For Round Five against Yarra Valley we made the trip to the picturesque Healesville on the second Monday. It took no time to put the shelters up. Another toss won and another decision to bowl first. The first breakthrough came in the 3rd over, Josh taking a catch behind the stumps off Jayden. Two overs later, he bowled the other opener. Another two overs later, Harry took his first wicket, caught by Jayden. The bowling was very tight and the fielding disciplined which kept the run rate less than 4 an over. Wickets 4 and 5 came in quick succession, Dan taking a catch off Jordan and Campbell taking a catch off Thilina. The 6th wicket was a DIRECT HIT run out, Jordan’s golden arm off Dan’s bowling. Jayden’s next wicket was a catch by Campbell in slips to get the top scoring batsman out on 39! The Yarra Valley boys rallied, batting 10 overs without a loss but we still restricted them to 3 runs an over. Another DIRECT HIT run out in the 36th over, this time the radar arm of Nathan S. The final wicket was another run out as the batsman tried to up the run rate. Again Dan and Campbell made a solid start putting on 39 runs in 8 overs before Dan was out lbw. Aiden stepped up making a fast 41 which included a SIX. The run rate stayed well above 4 an over for the whole innings so the target was reached in the 28th over. The decision was made to bat on. Jordan batted after the match had been won but still made a convincing 30 runs. The win was well deserved and placed us in a good spot on the ladder for the Mitchell Cup. Yarra Valley 9/120 (Hawkes 3/20, Walshe 1/3, Ley 1/15, Perera 1/17) def. by FTGDCA 4/121 (Inglis 41 ret. Craigie 21, Carr 17, Ley 30*) The Quarter Final was against Williamstown. The close games and the one win allowed us a home final and guess what? We won the toss again. Bowling again, the opening bowlers kept the score down. Harry took an early wicket, bowling one of the openers, Tim the other opener caught by Jayden. Perry took the 3rd wicket, bowled – his first for the tournament – before Dan pitched in taking 2 in an over, Nathan S and Campbell taking catches. The 6th wicket was a run out. Thilina took a catch off Harry for the 7th wicket, then Matthew took a catch off Harry for the 8th. Thilina took the last wicket but not before they posted a formidable 188. Our opening batsmen owned the bowlers, both retired on 40. Aiden retired on 42. The first wicket fell in the 26th over with the score on 137. Needing 54 off 14 overs, Nathan P hit his stride scoring a solid 16. Thilina supported well rotating the strike with singles. Matthew and Nathan S came together with 7 overs to go and 23 runs to get. Nathan hit two SIXES ending not out. Williamstown 188 (Walshe 3/29, Perera 2/27, Carr 2/31, Cole 1/18) def. by FTGDCA 4/191 (Carr 40 ret, Craigie 40 ret, Inglis 42 ret, Slaughter 21*, Potalej 16) The Semi Final was to be against Jika Cricket Association. I think everyone’s reaction was “Where is Jika?” Answer – a long way!! And you guessed it, we won the toss again!!! The opening bowlers Nathan S and Jayden again bowled well to two good opening batsmen. Harry bowled the first opener, then Jayden took a catch off Perry in the next over to get the number 3. The opposition batted consistently with one of their openers retiring. The 3rd wicket fell in the 22nd over, bowled Perry with the score on 96. Jika put on a 50 run partnership before Nathan P took a catch off Nathan S. The last 5 overs saw 6 wickets fall. Jayden and Harry both took 2 in an over, Jordan, Campbell and Nathan P all took catches. In the last over, there was a run out, and Tim took a catch off Jayden – we were chasing 170. Dan and Campbell opened the batting without much luck, but Aiden continued his form retiring on 40. Jordan batted well for 16. The run rate was kept above 5 per over for most of the match, Josh and Matthew put on a 51 run partnership off 12 overs giving us a great chance to make the runs, Matthew hitting the winning runs. Jika 170 (Hawkes 3/23, Walshe 3/24, Cole 2/30) def. by FTGDCA 6/171 (Inglis 40 ret, Price 26*, Wylde 20, Ley 16) On to the Grand Final!! We arrived at the ground in wet, drizzly conditions, to find that our opening bowler, Nathan S has snapped an ankle ligament in the previous days club match and was on crutches and unable to play. The remaining 12 boys all vowed to do something extra for Nathan, and we waited for the weather to clear so we could take on local rivals, Ringwood District. They had finished top in the pool, but were up against the JUGGERNAUT!! Campbell finally lost a toss, after 6 straight wins, and Ringwood decided to bat first. As we would have bowled anyway, the lost toss was not important. With the ball swinging in the humid conditions, Jayden had the opener caught behind in the first over. Timmy followed this up bowling the number 3 in the second over – Ringwood 2 for 2. Ringwood consolidated for a partnership of 41 before Jordan struck in the 17th over, bowling the second opener. Two quick wickets fell in the next 3 overs with a great run out from Jayden, and Dan having the batsman step back on his stumps trying to play his looping slow ball. Some good batting and running saw the score along to 76 in the 26th over, when Dan finished his spell having the number 7 batsman caught by Campbell. A flurry of runs saw the score to 95 before a throw from Tim to Jayden at the bowlers end was quickly relayed to keeper Josh for a smart run out, and the final 3 wickets quickly fell, Jordan spreadeagling the stumps, and both Jayden and Harry hitting the timber. Ringwood all out for 96. Our Monbulk opening pair, captain Campbell and vice captain Dan, opened up with another solid opening stand before Dan was run out for 21 right on drinks with the score on 42. Aiden played all around a straight one soon after drinks which brought our pocket dynamo Jordan to the crease. Campbell battled through his innings but was finally dismissed for 15 in the 21st over. Josh joined Jordan and together they brought us to victory knocking off the remaining 41 runs in 13 overs. Ringwood had tried all their bowlers to no avail, FTGDCA taking out the Keith Mitchell Cup in a convincing manner. RDCA 96 (Hawkes 2/9, Carr 2/11, Ley 2/16) def. by FTGDCA 3/97 Ley 25*, Carr 21, Craigie 15, Wylde 10*) Jordan Ley was presented with the player of the final trophy, and special congratulations for Dan Carr who tied for the Arthur Ince award as the player of the Carnival. Over the seven matches we have seen a tremendous improvement in the boys as they adapted to playing at this level. We would love to have played the first week again as we have no doubt that we would account for those teams after losing a game in the last over, and falling short in a run chase by 13 and 8 runs in the other two games. The boys have bonded well and their friendships have extended beyond the boundaries of club cricket. Although each and every player contributed along the way the following stats are outstanding: Batting: Daniel Carr 175 runs @ 43.75 (3 retirements) Aiden Inglis 158 runs @ 39.5 (3 retirements) Campbell Craigie 113 @ 18.83 (1 retirement) Jordan Ley 106 @35.33 Bowling: Harry Walshe 12 wickets @ 9.08 (2.84 runs per over) Jayden Hawkes 9 @ 15.67 (3.62 rpo) Daniel Carr 8 @ 18.00 (3.60 rpo) Fielding: Campbell Craigie 8 catches, 1 run out Jayden Hawkes 5 catches, 3 run outs Congratulations to the boys and thank you for the parental support.
