The beginning of the 1996/97 cricket season at the South Belgrave Cricket Club saw a boy from just across the road begin what would become a promising career with the bat and ball. In the past twelve months, Glenn Maxwell has taken his place among the Victorian Bushrangers and represented Australia in the Hong Kong Super Sixes in what has been a highly successful period for the 21 year old. Maxwell fondly recalls his days as an aspiring young cricketer at South Belgrave following in the footsteps of his father, Neil and older brother Daniel, who is now club captain. In his time at the club, Maxwell amassed a series of achievements which included being named Leader Newspaper Sports Star of the Year in 2004 and playing in the winning Victorian Under 15 schoolboys team. It was with the help of those around the club that he began his development into the player he is today. Maxwell attributes most of his progression to former coach Stuart Alford. “My biggest influence down there would have been Stu Alford, in my last two years at South Belgrave, he really helped me change my game plan,” something which contributed to Maxwell’s success in the Victorian Under 19 team and subsequently saw him awarded a Cricket Victoria rookie contract in July last year. Former coach, Alford now putting something back into local cricket as an umpire, remembers his mentoring days at South. “Glenn was a terrific kid to coach however it was really weird when the 15 year old in your first eleven was the best player in the club. I’m just happy he’s gone on” says Alford. “It’s a lot tougher, but I’m enjoying the new challenges,” says Maxwell of training with the Bushrangers. “We do four sessions a week and that can include weights, cardio and swimming.” However, despite dedicating most of his time to the Victorian Squad, Maxwell still manages to return to his old club at South Belgrave to assist the new generation of young cricketers coming through. “It’s harder now, with my Victorian commitments, but I still get down there once a week to help out with the kids.” Whilst he dedicates time to helping his younger counterparts to reach their full potential, Maxwell, too remains intently focused on his own goals, the ultimate of which is to play first class cricket for Australia. Adding to his recent successes, in 2009, he represented Australia in the Hong Kong Super Sixes tournament, which he described as an “amazing experience.” Despite some bad luck in terms of tosses and unfortunate defeats, the chance to play with team mates from around the country and travel overseas to play cricket was something that he feels very lucky to be a part of and more recently played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a KFC Twenty/20 Big Bash against New South Wales. It is these experiences Maxwell will take with him on his quest to play cricket at the highest level, a far cry from the boy who crossed the road to play cricket 13 years ago. DOUBLE TROUBLE
By Steve Brown Meet identical twins Luke & Robbie McComb, members of the Ferntree Gully Footballers Cricket Club under 15 team. The brothers joined the club last season and were part of the U/13 (2) premiership win against Knoxfield in their first year of cricket. The boys live in Ferntree Gully and are very active playing football, cricket and tennis and are extremely competitive in anything they do. At present Luke is the equal highest run scorer in the FTGDCA’s U/15 (2A) with 155 runs at an average of 51.67 and is the third highest wicket taker with 8 wickets @ 2.13. He was lucky enough to take a hat trick against The Basin in round 1. Robbie sits in tenth place on the association batting table with 113 runs averaging 37.67 with a highest score of 53 not out. Both boys also keep wickets and their coach, Adrian Brown believes that Robbie is the best young slip fielder he has seen for some time. Robbie & Luke are currently in the association’s under 14 squad for the VMCU championships in January, 2010. The boys have plenty of fun with their appearance and recently confused Shane Cross at comp indoor training when he said to one of them, “Didn’t I just tell you to pad up?” (Not knowing there was two of them) Here is a Photo of the two boys, don't ask me which is which.

Match report Under 16's - FTGDCA V West Gippsland 25th October at Cranbourne Reserve Toss won by West Gippsland who chose to bat Game scores West Gippsland - 10/140 cc FTGDCA - 7/ 140 cc Match Drawn Jayden Brown was asked to captain this game and rotated 8 bowlers in very cold and windy conditions Ground fielding was of a very good standard through out and contributed to two run outs. Beau Newman/Jordon McDermott combined for one and Darryn Osborne made a direct hit for the other. Strong bowling contributions by: Jarryd Roleff - 9 overs 4 maidens 2 for 13 Jorden McDermott - 10/5/1 for 16 Matt Hart - 10/0/ 2 for 31 ..all 10 into a very tough head wind. Other single wickets came from Beau Newman, Steven Moore and Jayden Brown. A couple of encouraging first up performances also came from left armers Brodie Emmett and Tom Nash. Darryn Osbornes glovework, when either back to the quicks, or up over the stumps was very competent. Darryn and Sam Glazner batted together for the first 20 overs and put on a solid 48 for the first wicket. Darryn falling for 27. Sam batted with Cam Ludowyke, till he was dismissed in the 30th over for 23. Their partnership brought the score to 76. At the 40th over the score was 2/106 with Cam and Matt Howard in control. 35 required off final 10 overs With 5 overs to go, we were 2/126 and needing 15 to win. Unfortunately, at the end of over 48 and the beginning of over 49, both Cam, who batted well for his 52, and Matt 19 were dismissed with the score on 132. Their partnership of 56 meant the team needed 9 to win off the final 11 balls. The last over of the day created lots of tension and was full of action. Requiring 6 to win we lost 2 further wickets and finally needed 4 to win off the last ball. A miss field turned a two into a three and both teams had to walk away with a drawn game. Ive been involved in cricket now for 40 years, as a player and coach and have never experienced a game result like this. Left me with a hollow feeling and dissapointed for the players who worked so hard all day. Sometimes winning cricket games can come down to who does the small things better and who makes the least number of mistakes. On reflection, the 5 no balls we bowled compared to W.Gippslands none and the 4 runs we missed out on because of "short runs" when we batted proved costly. However, looking forward to seeing the squad train again this Wednesday at 7pm Special thankyou to the parents who braved the cold to come and support the players And a special thankyou to Mrs Harts who did such a fine job looking after the scorebook.
